journeymen theater

Journeymen Theater is a 501(c)(3) company that was started almost 5 years ago.  We are currently in our 4th season of producing shows that address social and moral issues that are chosen so as to promote discussion with our audience members.

Our vision for Journeymen Theater is vast and yet incredibly focused.  We envision a theater company that is producing plays that challenge people, both Christians and non-Christians, to examine social and moral issues that beset our country today.  This can be done with humor and intense dramas, by plays that are newly written to old classics, but constantly with an eye at finding plays that will promote discussions long after someone has left the theater.  Our theater is also know for challenging its artists to take big risks artistically – from the design elements to the directing choices to the graphic design of the program - so as to best achieve the excellence that we feel called to pursue.

Journeymen Theater is also a company whose heart is in outreach to not only the artists that work for us but to our surrounding community as well.  Last year we produced a tour that went out to perform at no cost for people that had no access to theater. During our production of Getting Out, we held a book drive in which we collected over 500 books that went to Books for Prisons and the New Beginnings Program at the NoVA Juvenile Detention Center .  We also made and shared dinner with the residents of St. Luke's Shelter in Northwest, DC and look forward to further developing our relationship with the Shelter through creating drama workshops designed to assist residents as they recover from addiction and build life skills.

Life's a Dream
January 9 – February 2, 2008
by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, adapted by John Barton and Adrian Mitchell
Directed by Alexander Strain

Frank Rich of the New York Times wrote, " Life's a Dream, the Calderón metaphysical masterpiece, is one of the finest fruits of the 17th-century golden age of Spanish drama... an ever pertinent play about the power of free will."  Calderón’s work is playfully re-imagined by one of DC’s most talented young actor/director featuring a company of his equally-respected peers.

the vision

Journeymen Theater strives to promote positive social change by creating a forum for community discussion and presenting various sides to difficult questions through the plays it produces.  JTE also provides a safe environment where artists can explore new facets of humanity and themselves.  JTE continually challenges its artists to reach their full potential by maintaining a professional standard, one that is expected from each member of the core company as well as from the individual actors, designers, staff and directors who work on every show.  As issues change and new needs emerge, JTE strives to find opportunities to continue to serve and inspire its artists and audiences.
